Description:
Medical abortion is a method of early termination of pregnancy using a combination of two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. This option is available for women who are up to 8 weeks pregnant and is also referred to as RU486 or medication abortion.
During the initial appointment at the clinic, the patient is administered mifepristone, which is taken orally. Then, 24 to 72 hours later, misoprostol is taken privately. Misoprostol induces contractions that lead to the termination of the pregnancy. When used together, mifepristone and misoprostol have a success rate of 95-97% within two weeks. Both medications are approved by the FDA.
Indications and Usage:
Mifepristone is used in conjunction with misoprostol (Cytotec) to terminate an early pregnancy, defined as having occurred within 70 days since the last menstrual period began. Mifepristone belongs to a class of medications known as antiprogestational steroids. It functions by inhibiting the action of progesterone, a hormone that supports the continuation of pregnancy.
Additionally, mifepristone may be utilized to terminate pregnancies beyond 70 days from the last menstrual period; as an emergency contraceptive following unprotected sexual intercourse (commonly referred to as the “morning-after pill”); to treat brain tumors, endometriosis (the growth of uterine tissue outside the uterus), or fibroids (noncancerous tumors in the uterus); or to induce labor in pregnant women.
