Clotrimazole is widely available as an over-the-counter medication in various formulations, including cream, vaginal tablets, and prescription troches or throat lozenges.
Clotrimazole exerts its antifungal effects by targeting individual Candida or fungal cells, disrupting the permeability of the fungal cell wall. It binds to phospholipids in the cell membrane and inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol and other sterols necessary for the production of the cell membrane. This disruption ultimately results in cell death due to the loss of intracellular components.
Indications and Usage:
Clotrimazole is indicated for the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infection) and cutaneous yeast infections. For vulvovaginal candidiasis, clotrimazole tablets and creams are administered intravaginally. Troche or throat lozenge formulations are utilized for the treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis (oral thrush) and as prophylaxis against oral thrush in neutropenic patients. Additionally, it is effective in treating yeast infections of the vagina, mouth, and skin, including conditions such as athlete’s foot, jock itch, and body ringworm.
