Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg Tablets are a form of emergency contraception designed to prevent pregnancy following unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. Levonorgestrel is a second-generation progestin (synthetic progestogen) that serves as an active ingredient in various hormonal contraceptives, including combined oral contraceptive pills, progestogen-only pills, emergency contraceptive pills, intrauterine devices, contraceptive implants, and hormone replacement therapy.
The primary mechanism of action of levonorgestrel as a progestogen-only emergency contraceptive pill is to inhibit fertilization by preventing ovulation and thickening the cervical mucus.
Indications and Usage:
Levonorgestrel is indicated for use in emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs), which may be administered as part of a combined Yuzpe regimen containing estrogen or as a levonorgestrel-only method. The levonorgestrel-only regimen involves a single dose of 1.5 mg or two doses of 0.75 mg taken 12 hours apart, ideally within 3 days of unprotected intercourse. One study suggests that the medication may still be effective when initiated as late as 120 hours (5 days) after intercourse.
