Sparfloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class, used to combat bacterial infections in the body. Like other drugs in its class, sparfloxacin exhibits bactericidal activity, meaning it actively kills bacteria. Quinolones, including fluoroquinolones, work by inhibiting the bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase or topoisomerase IV, which are essential for DNA replication and transcription. These drugs can easily penetrate cells, making them particularly effective against intracellular pathogens like Legionella pneumophila and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. In gram-negative bacteria, DNA gyrase is typically the primary target, while topoisomerase IV is the target in many gram-positive bacteria. Eukaryotic cells lack these enzymes, so they are not affected by quinolones.
