Description:
Ceftriaxone is a broad-spectrum, semi-synthetic, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with potent bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. Ceftriaxone remains effective in the presence of certain beta-lactamases, including penicillinases and cephalosporinases, produced by both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Sulbactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, is often combined with ceftriaxone to enhance its efficacy by inhibiting the beta-lactamases that may otherwise inactivate ceftriaxone.
Indications and Usage:
Ceftriaxone injection is indicated for the treatment of the following infections:
- Sepsis and meningitis;
- Intra-abdominal infections (e.g., peritonitis, biliary, and gastrointestinal tract infections);
- Bone, joint, soft tissue, skin, and wound infections;
- Infections in immunocompromised patients;
- Renal and urinary tract infections;
- Respiratory tract infections, particularly pneumonia, as well as ear, nose, and throat infections;
- Genital infections, including gonorrhea.
- Perioperative prophylaxis of infections.
May also be used for Peri-operative Prophylaxis of Infections. A single dose given Preoperatively may reduce chances of Postoperative Infection.
