Amikacin Sulphate Injection

Product Name: Amikacin Sulphate Injection

Common Name: aminoglycoside antibiotic injection

Strength: 500 mg / 2 ml

Description:

Amikacin, marketed under the brand name Amikin, is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, leading to the misreading of mRNA. This disruption inhibits the bacterium’s ability to synthesize essential proteins, thereby preventing bacterial growth and replication.

Indications and Usage:

Amikacin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death.

It is primarily used to treat severe, hospital-acquired infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter, and Enterobacter species. Other organisms in its spectrum include Serratia marcescens and Providencia stuartii. Amikacin is also effective in treating non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections and tuberculosis caused by drug-sensitive strains when first-line treatments are inadequate.

Although Amikacin is ineffective against viral infections like colds or flu, it has demonstrated efficacy in treating staphylococcal infections. It may be considered for initial therapy in cases of severe infections where the causative agent could be either a Gram-negative bacterium or a staphylococcus. Additionally, it is used to treat staphylococcal infections in patients allergic to other antibiotics or in cases of mixed Gram-negative and staphylococcal infections.
