Description:
Streptococcus salivarius is a species of spherical, gram-positive, anaerobic bacteria that is both catalase and oxidase negative. S. salivarius typically colonizes the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract of humans within a few hours after birth, rendering subsequent exposure to this bacterium harmless in most cases. While generally benign, S. salivarius is considered an opportunistic pathogen and can infrequently enter the bloodstream, where it has been associated with sepsis, particularly in individuals with neutropenia (a deficiency of white blood cells).
