This bacterium is classified as aciduric or acidophilic, requiring a low pH (approximately 5.4–4.6) for optimal growth. It has complex nutritional requirements. Lactobacillus bulgaricus is commonly utilized in the production of yogurt and is also present in various naturally fermented products.
