Description:Bifidobacteria are Gram-positive, anaerobic, branched rod-shaped bacteria that are non-motile and non-spore forming. In the colon, these bacteria ferment a diverse range of sugars into lactic acid. They possess homologs of enzymes that repair oxidative damage, including NADH oxidase and NADH peroxidase. Additionally, they contain proteins that counteract oxidative damage to proteins and lipids, such as thiol peroxidase, alkyl hydroperoxide reductase (ahpC), and peptide methionine sulfoxide reductase. Although Bifidobacterium longum is not significantly present in the adult gastrointestinal tract, it is considered a component of the gut flora, and its production of lactic acid is believed to inhibit the growth of pathogenic organisms. B. longum is non-pathogenic and is frequently added to food products.

B. longum is commonly found in dairy products, such as yogurt, and is also available as a dietary supplement. Additionally, B. longum is one of the first microbial inhabitants of the gastrointestinal tract in infants, particularly those who are breast-fed. In contrast, formula-fed infants tend to exhibit a different gut microbiota, which may be linked to an increased risk of diarrhea and allergies.
